ROUND III

Why do I need to know about marine litter as an educator?

Marine Litter – any persistent manufactured or processed solid material that is found in seas or coasts–has globally emerged as a challenging problem: Found in all seas and coasts around the world ... lying on shores ... floating anywhere from the surface to the bottom of the sea ... even in the most isolated, pristine environments, marine litter poses a threat to the environment, human health and safety, as well as livelihoods. It is a complex and challenging problem, which stems from the prevailing production and consumption patterns, and from how we deal with our wastes.

What is the e-course about?

This e-course is based on the educational material “Know, feel, act! to stop Marine Litter”. This is a product of the MARLISCO project (read below) that it is currently being translated and applied in 15 countries. It contains a set of 17 educational activities examining the characteristics, sources, effects and possible ways to tackle the problem, addressing it from an environmental, societal, cultural and economic point of view. It has been designed to primarily serve middle school level, but can be easily adjusted to fit the needs of younger or older students, OR to be used outside the formal schooling system.

We could say that the total e-course is equivelant to a 1.5 full day face-to-face seminar with the aim to train participants on effective ways of teaching about marine litter issues.
The course language is English.

What will I get from this course?

  • You will get familiar with the educational material “Know, feel, act! to stop Marine Litter”.
  • You will be shared some teaching ideas about marine litter you could apply with students or other audiences, and contribute your own ideas.
  • You will "come in the shoes of students" thus try out and evaluate specific activities from the educational material.
  • You will exchange views with educators (both formal and non formal) from other European countries.
  • You will eventually use some e-tools that you weren’t aware of.

What is adaptive collaborative learning?

This is not a course based on individual reading and a final test. It is based on the principle of adaptive collaborative learning, which means participants will need to actively contribute to it by taking part in the forum discussions, posing questions to fellow participants and facilitators, making suggestions to improve the content and working solo or in groups to complete the assignments. Whatever form your participation will take, you will be co-responsible for the content development in the course and the level of interaction!

How much time need I invest?

This course is designed for people who can study, and work concurrently.
It will spread over a 2 week duration, however your total workload to go through the readings, watch the videos and complete the assignments is estimated to 16 hours (based on the previous runs).
The exact amount of time you will need to complete it will depend on your experience, degree of participation and familiarity with the subject.
Those keen on investing more time can go through the extended bibliography that will be shared with participants.
Afther the closing of the course one extra week will be given for those late ones to complete their assignments.

Is it synchronous or asynchronous?

The course is asynchronous which means you do not have to be online on any fixed day /time. You can spread your work-load over the week to times most convenient to you. Still, you will get the most out of it if you could keep up with your co-learners by devoting at least one hour per day, instead of accumulating the work in just one day or two. Facilitators will be available on weekdays 09.00 - 17.00, but learners can submit their contributions or questions at any time. We' ll do our best to keep our response time to the minimum.

Who will take part?

The e-course is addressed mainly, but not exclusively, to MARLISCO partner countries (Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Turkey, and United Kingdom) and welcomes:

  • Teachers of primary and secondary level of all disciplines (formal education sector).
  • Educators in museums, parks, aquariums, NGOs etc. (non formal education sector).
  • Managers, scientists, staff, volunteers, etc. of aquatic Parks, coastal local authorities, etc. with an experience in the topic of marine litter and an interest in education.

Applications from other countries of the Euro-Mediterranean area are also eligible and will be accepted depending on the quality of the application form.
Applications are treated as first come-first served basis

How many are expected to take part?

Thie is the third time we repeat this course and based on the previous runs we will accommodate aproximately 120-150 participants. We aspire that the variety of nationalities, professions, and backgrounds of the course participants will lead to a creative blend and offer us the chance to learn from each other, how we can better sensitise our audiences in the complex issue of tackling litter in our seas.

What are the requirements for those taking part?
