Tuesday 7 November 14.00hrs - 17.00hrs | Radiological Removal of Doubt

When a hazmat team is called to deal with a radiological/nuclear hazard the first step is to validate or deny the presence of abnormal radioactivity; this is called "removal of doubt." Is there radioactivity above the level of natural radioactivity and from the value on a detector does the incident commander need to be informed about the absence of a proven radioactive risk?

This is a delicate operation, which if misinterpreted can have serious consequences. Well-trained personnel must carry out the removal of doubts under the best possible measurement conditions, using a few concepts: Statistical decision thresholds and detection limits; photon spectrometry differentials; return to Becquerel’s from counts per second.

Based on real operational events, the purpose of this workshop is to share the best methods to remove operational using real radioactive sources and materials.

Tuesday 7 November 14.00hrs - 17.00hrs | Rescue Task Force Operations in a CBRNE Environment

The workshop aims to discuss the multifaceted challenges that would be encountered by Rescue Task Forces operating within a CBRNE environment. These challenges transcend disciplinary boundaries and necessitate a multidisciplinary holistic approach to preparedness. We will look at additional equipment needs to include detection and monitoring devices and personal protective equipment. In the final portion of our workshop, we will discuss the necessity of decontamination for both victims and responders.

Tuesday 7 November 13.00hrs - 17.00hrs  | Enhanced Technology Training in Radiological and Nuclear Material Alarm Response

Conference attendees will have the opportunity to visit the Oak Ridge Enhanced Technology and Training Center (ORETTC)—part of NNSA’s Y-12 National Security Complex—and learn about some of the latest radiological/nuclear response training methods and techniques being used in the newly-opened, state-of-the-art Emergency Response Training Facility (ERTF) on the ORETTC campus. The $15.1M facility enables the development of innovative approaches for emerging technological challenges and risk mitigation for critical infrastructure. ERTF provides local, state, national, and international organizations and government agencies with access to hands-on experience in high-consequence operations, emergency management, state-of-the-art technology, training evaluation and performance testing, and other advanced technical and tactical training areas.

Attendees will be split into three groups, and each group will alternate through three presentation/demonstration sessions throughout the afternoon. The sessions will include an ORETTC campus and programmatic overviews, augmented reality/virtual reality immersive technique demonstrations, and a virtual production training demonstration that combines ORETTC’s 9-by-45-ft LED wall with green screen technology for a realistic training experience.
