In November, a month dedicated to art, we come a little closer to the most iconic tree of Greek nature, the olive tree, whose characteristic silvery leaves give the Mediterranean landscape its unique character. The olive tree has always held a special place in art – Homer, Ritsos, Elytis, Sikelianos, and Lorca have written about it. The tree, its fruit and its oil are rich in symbolisms and are considered valuable gifts of nature, defining our cultural identity and forming the basis of the renowned Mediterranean diet.

Olive harvesting and the production of olive oil takes place in the middle of autumn. It requires plenty of time and effort, but at the same time it is also a celebration. A celebration of the precious fruit of life that nature has to offer us. In November, SNFCC Members will have the opportunity to participate in the process of harvesting olives from the trees of Stavros Niarchos Park, and learn about the process of pressing and the production of olive oil. They will take part in the immersive experience of protecting and properly managing olive trees and connect with the tradition of the land and the art of cultivating it.

The harvest will be facilitated by representatives of Stavros Niarchos Park and the maintenance contractor.

* Prior to the start of the harvest, participants’ footwear will be sterilized with a special solution, a process necessary to enter the plant beds of Stavros Niarchos Park.

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center’s Park has about 400 olive trees, mainly of the Megara, Amfissa, Koroneiki and Kalamon varieties. The crop is harvested in the traditional way, without the use of machinery; the fruit is transported to the mill and is immediately cold-pressed.
