After posting the manuscript in the case journal, the author's decision came from the editor, "accept with major revisions". Reviewers were encouraged to do some new experiments and analysis to be adopted. The correction included a considerable amount of revision, but the author took the hands of two colleagues, managed to carry out all the mentioned changes, and finally posted the correction as scheduled. The author thought that the correction could not be made without a colleague, so the author recognized the achievements of the colleague and decided to add their names to the coauthors of the dissertation.

To my surprise, a few days later, the editor returned a reply asking about the addition of a new co-author. The editors wanted information on how the newly added co-authors contributed to the dissertation. Also, it was suggested that if you did not meet the author qualification criteria recommended by the ICMJE, the names of your colleagues who helped you should be listed in the Acknowledgments section, not as coauthors.

The author then contacted us and was asked to help identify the additional dissertation writers as meeting the author qualification criteria.

That you have made

us, each of the newly added co-author, was asked to detail the author or was any contribution. One out of two said that they conducted an overall statistical analysis and also helped interpret the data on the basis of additional analysis. We also helped to rewrite certain sections of the manuscript.

A second colleague provided us with the necessary and essential reagents needed for the most important experiments the author did during the dissertation correction.

Based on the author qualification criteria established by ICMJE, our publishing experts have determined that the first colleague is eligible for authorship. The reason is that the first colleague

  •  Contributed to analysis and interpretation of data in research
  • Revised the draft of the paper to incorporate additional research results
  • I agreed to give final approval for the research to be published and to be responsible for the research.

However, the contribution by the second colleague was not enough to qualify the author. It only helped with the sourcing of reagents; it did not help with data collection and did not play any important role in analysis or correction of the dissertation. So we suggested that the second colleague's name should be included in the acknowledgment, not as a coauthor.

The author agreed with our view, added the first colleague as a co-author, and the second colleague told the editor to state in the acknowledgment. He also stated clearly what kind of contribution each colleague made. The editor was convinced of the above arrangement, and the paper was carried.

Summary According to the ICMJE guidelines , author qualifications are based on the following criteria:

  • A considerable contribution to the research concept or plan; or a considerable contribution to the collection, analysis and interpretation of research data; and
  • Write drafts of research or critically correct important intellectual content; and
  • Final approval of the edition immediately before the publication of the dissertation; and
  • Consent to be responsible for all aspects of the research to ensure that questions regarding the accuracy or completeness of any part of the research are properly investigated and resolved.

Not all journals explicitly ask for contributions by the author: not all journals have a duty to submit a text about contributions (qualifications), but the cover letter does not It is generally considered to be good practice to list contributions. However, if there is any change in the author list when you submit a revised article, you need to be clear about what kind of contributions the authors have made and what their quality is, to avoid further trouble.
