Thursday 20 April 2023

The bunker industry faces an uncertain outlook in 2023 after last year's record profits, with significant economic turmoil around the world likely to deliver declining demand but further volatility keeping margins strong. Container markets have been in decline since late last year, dry bulk faces an uncertain outlook as China comes out of its COVID-19 restrictions, and restrictions on the carriage of Russian oil cargoes have yet to result in a significant uplift for the tanker segment. New regulations are also continuing apace for the bunker industry, with the IMO's CII regulation now in effect and the EU's emissions trading system for shipping and a new sulphur emissions limit for the Mediterranean around the corner.

Join us at the IBIA Mediterranean Energy and Shipping Conference in Genoa in April for an in-depth discussion of the state of the bunker industry, the regional outlook in the Mediterranean and the prospects for shipping's decarbonisation.

Session Two: Regional Dynamics: Regional Focus / Suppliers panel.
The Mediterranean bunker markets saw a significant impact from the conflict in Ukraine last year, with Russian oil no longer welcome in most countries and a global shortage of middle distillate blending components. These markets face further disruption over the coming years after the IMO adopted its plan for a 0.1% sulphur limit in the region at its MEPC meeting late last year. This panel features a range of bunker supplier, producer, trader and consumer executives discussing how the region's markets are responding to the current disruption.

This panel will take on how these regulations will affect the bunker industry, both at the global and regional level, and discuss what might come next.

Session Four: Financing Bunker operations in current market conditions
The bunker industry's finances faced unprecedented turbulence last year as prices jumped to record highs over the summer and remained volatile throughout the year. The industry's credit conditions largely remained stable despite the record prices, but credit lines may now need to be revised as the global economy heads into a likely recession in 2023. This panel features a range of credit and insurance experts examining the state of the bunker industry's finances and how it can continue to protect itself in what looks set to be another volatile year.
Moderator: Jack Jordan, Managing Editor, Ship & Bunker
