As the ad and marketing industry cautiously approach the 2020’s it seems that data and creativity are locked in a “bras de fer”: - an arm-wrestling contest which could determine the evolution of brand communications for the rest of the 21st century.
Two venerable statesmen of advertising who shaped 20th century advertising have already placed their bets: Sir John Hegarty, warns that “Creativity is receding from the world of marketing and the obsession with data is to blame” whereas Martin Sorrell believes “the definition of creativity needs to change… Three drivers — technology, data and content are changing the nature of creativity."
