Fri 17 May \| Wicklow Tour \| Powerscourt Estate & Glendalough Description + - Friday 17 May \| 09:30hrs - 17:00hrs The County of Wicklow, located just 16 miles south of Dublin is known as The Garden of Ireland. The area is famed for its many beautiful formal gardens including Avondale, Powerscourt and Mount Usher, and for its stunning and epic landscape. Popular films such as Brave Heart and Excalibur were filmed in the area, which is also home to Ireland’s famous Ardmore Film Studios. Powerscourt Gardens are one of Europe’s great treasures and one of the most beautiful country estates in Ireland. 47 acres of gardens to explore, rated the 3rd best gardens in the world behind Versailles and Kew Gardens! Although there is also a house here, it was destroyed by fire in 1974 the night before it was due to open to the public. There is just a shell now but this houses Avoca café and shop which sells local gourmet treats and products, such as their famous throws, and clothing from Wicklow Mill. The Wicklow Tour continues on for lunch at the Wicklow Heather Restaurant, idyllically situated in the picturesque village of Laragh deep in the Wicklow Mountains. Homely comfortable surroundings with a friendly service are the order of the day at the Wicklow Heather Restaurant. After lunch we continue onto Glendalough Lakes and Monastic Site, where St. Kevin, descendent of one of the ruling families in Leinster, founded his monastery in the 6th century.
