SNFCC Μembers’ Last Look at the Art Installation Maman | Exclusive tour by Galini Notti

On Friday, November 4, SNFCC Members will have a final opportunity to participate in an exclusive guided visit to Maman, 2 days before it is taken down from the SNFCC Esplanade.

The tour will be guided by Galini Notti, assistant curator of NEON.

The installation of Maman marked the first-ever collaboration between the SNFCC and NEON, in a joint effort to disseminate contemporary art and facilitate its contact with a wider public. The shared aim of the two organizations is to redefine public space, as well as to upgrade the daily lives of the city’s inhabitants.

The iconic sculpture Maman (1999) by Louise Bourgeois was brought to the Greek public by NEON Cultural and Development Organization and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC). As Bourgeois’s world-famous giant spider bids farewell to the SNFCC Esplanade, Members will have one final opportunity to take a guided tour of the installation.

Maman, more than 10 meters tall, was created in 2000, as the artist’s first commission for Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall, and was later cast in bronze, steel and marble. As Bourgeois has stated, Maman symbolizes her mother, who used to weave and mend tapestries. Through this sculpture, the artist attempted to explore her complex and contradictory relationship with motherhood.

Through her art, Louise Bourgeois expressed her deeper thoughts and fears, negotiated her problems, and gave her emotions shape and form. In her prints, drawings, fabric works, installations, and sculptures — becoming best known for the latter — Bourgeois explored the concepts of guilt, fear, memory, motherhood, and love. Her art was always strongly influenced by her personal life, particularly her childhood.
