A specialized tour by NLG, exclusively for the SNFCC Members, as part of the SNFCC’s 5-year anniversary celebration

The Membership Program of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), in collaboration with the National Library of Greece (NLG), host a unique visit-tour for the SNFCC Members, at the exhibition «The Printing Houses during the Greek Revolution».

Which are the printing houses during the Greek Revolution? When do they start operating and for how long? Which factors affect their operation? What is their contribution to the Greek Revolution?

The establishment and operation of printing houses in the revolted Greek territory starts just a few months after the beginning of the Greek War of Independence. Since they are almost entirely short-term attempts, printing houses become known and historically established on the basis of the place they operate: Kalamata, Korinthos, Hydra, Missolonghi, Athens, Psara, Nafplio, Aegina. From 1821 to 1827, printing houses serve the aims of the Greek Revolution in various ways despite difficulties in issues related both to technical equipment and human resources.

The production of those printing houses consists of more or less forty-four books, seven newspapers and at least two hundred and twenty single-page leaflets.

Representative samples from the National Library of Greece collections are presented in cooperation with the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre emphasizing the role the printing press played during those crucial times.

The tour will be conducted by Giorgos Stauratis, Archivist – Librarian and Evi Kapoli, Historian.
